5\u00a0<\/span>Therefore…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Again, what’s it “there for”? Well, since the Ephesians have put away sin and are living in virtue…<\/p>\n

…be imitators of God, as beloved children. <\/span>2\u00a0<\/sup>And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

…they are called to live the life of Christ, imitating Him and offering themselves in sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2).<\/p>\n

Renounce Pagan Ways<\/span><\/h3>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>But immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul calls his readers to the highest standard of living.<\/p>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; …<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul isn’t denouncing jokes, but crudity and frivolousness.<\/p>\n

…but instead let there be thanksgiving.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From this word we get the word “eucharist”.<\/p>\n

<\/span>5\u00a0<\/sup>Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He explains what is at stake – entry into the Kingdom of Heaven.<\/p>\n

<\/span>6\u00a0<\/sup>Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. <\/span>7\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore do not associate with them, …<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul now seems to be warning his readers against those who would say that one can act immorally and still be a Christian.<\/p>\n

…\u00a0<\/span>8\u00a0<\/sup>for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light <\/span>9\u00a0<\/sup>(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),<\/span>10\u00a0<\/sup>and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Again Paul exhorts them to virtuous living.<\/p>\n

<\/span>11\u00a0<\/sup>Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. <\/span>12\u00a0<\/sup>For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; <\/span>13\u00a0<\/sup>but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. <\/span>14\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore it is said,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAwake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead,<\/span>
\nand Christ shall give you light.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

15\u00a0<\/sup>Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, <\/span>16\u00a0<\/sup>making the most of the time, because the days are evil. <\/span>17\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. <\/span>18\u00a0<\/sup>And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; …<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul continues to exhort his readers to shun evil…<\/p>\n

…but be filled with the Spirit, <\/span>19\u00a0<\/sup>addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, <\/span>20\u00a0<\/sup>always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

…and to embrace goodness.<\/p>\n

The Christian Household<\/span><\/h3>\n

A lot of people get very uptight concerning the following passage, but really there’s no need…<\/p>\n

21\u00a0<\/sup>Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the foundational principle of all that Paul later says – mutual service. From this verse alone, we cannot say that Paul is a misogynist.<\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. <\/span>23\u00a0<\/sup>For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. <\/span>24\u00a0<\/sup>As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul gives his instructions to wives. He compares the relationship between the\u00a0husband and wife to the relationship between Christ and the Church.<\/p>\n

<\/span>25\u00a0<\/sup>Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, <\/span>26\u00a0<\/sup>that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, <\/span>27\u00a0<\/sup>that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. <\/span>28\u00a0<\/sup>Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. <\/span>29\u00a0<\/sup>For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, <\/span>30\u00a0<\/sup>because we are members of his body.<\/span>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cFor this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.\u201d <\/span>32\u00a0<\/sup>This is a great mystery, and I mean in reference to Christ and the church; <\/span>33\u00a0<\/sup>however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul gives his instructions to the husbands. See how much more he says…<\/p>\n
