And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Since they didn&#8217;t have a loudspeaker&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28497\" class=\"text Mark-4-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>And he taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28498\" class=\"text Mark-4-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cListen! A sower went out to sow.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">The sower is God. The seed is His word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28499\" class=\"text Mark-4-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Some seed doesn&#8217;t even enter the soil<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28500\" class=\"text Mark-4-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had not much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil;<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28501\" class=\"text Mark-4-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>and when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Some seed fails due to lack of depth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28502\" class=\"text Mark-4-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Other seed fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Some seed grows but remains fruitless because of thorns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28503\" class=\"text Mark-4-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Some seed finds good soil and varying quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28504\" class=\"text Mark-4-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cHe who has ears to hear, let him hear.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28505\" class=\"text Mark-4-10\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Purpose of the Parables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-4-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>And when he was alone, those who were about him with the twelve asked him concerning the parables. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28506\" class=\"text Mark-4-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cTo you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28507\" class=\"text Mark-4-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>so that\u00a0they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus teaches in public in parables and explains them to his disciples in private.<\/p>\n<p>They will have to be the teachers of the Church in the future.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28508\" class=\"text Mark-4-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cDo you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28509\" class=\"text Mark-4-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>The sower sows the word.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28510\" class=\"text Mark-4-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown; when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28511\" class=\"text Mark-4-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>And these in like manner are the ones sown upon rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28512\" class=\"text Mark-4-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28513\" class=\"text Mark-4-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And others are the ones sown among thorns; they are those who hear the word, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28514\" class=\"text Mark-4-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28515\" class=\"text Mark-4-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus explains the parable.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28516\" class=\"text Mark-4-21\" style=\"color: #993300\">A Lamp under a Bushel Basket<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-4-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cIs a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28517\" class=\"text Mark-4-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>For there is nothing hid, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28518\" class=\"text Mark-4-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus teaches that light is to be given.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28519\" class=\"text Mark-4-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cTake heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28520\" class=\"text Mark-4-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives the economics of the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28521\" class=\"text Mark-4-26\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Parable of the Growing Seed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-4-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cThe kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28522\" class=\"text Mark-4-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28523\" class=\"text Mark-4-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28524\" class=\"text Mark-4-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This parable teaches about how the kingdom of God grows progressively and subtly and much in secret.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28525\" class=\"text Mark-4-30\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Parable of the Mustard Seed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-4-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cWith what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28526\" class=\"text Mark-4-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28527\" class=\"text Mark-4-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This parable teaches how the kingdom starts small and grows into something great.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28528\" class=\"text Mark-4-33\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Use of Parables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-4-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28529\" class=\"text Mark-4-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>he did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is repeated that Jesus taught publicly in parables, but explained them in private.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28530\" class=\"text Mark-4-35\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus Stills a Storm<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-4-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, \u201cLet us go across to the other side.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28531\" class=\"text Mark-4-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>And leaving the crowd, they took him with them, just as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28532\" class=\"text Mark-4-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28533\" class=\"text Mark-4-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus is not afraid.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28533\" class=\"text Mark-4-38\"> and they woke him and said to him, \u201cTeacher, do you not care if we perish?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course He does!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28534\" class=\"text Mark-4-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, \u201cPeace! Be still!\u201d And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus calms the storm with a word.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28535\" class=\"text Mark-4-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>He said to them, \u201cWhy are you afraid? Have you no faith?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus rebukes the disciples.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28536\" class=\"text Mark-4-41\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41\u00a0<\/sup>And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, \u201cWho then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The disciples start asking the right question&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Mark\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/\">Return to Chapter Index<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Parable of the Sower 4\u00a0Again he began to teach beside the sea.
