{"id":51859,"date":"2014-12-16T16:50:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T23:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=51859"},"modified":"2014-12-16T17:49:08","modified_gmt":"2014-12-17T00:49:08","slug":"chapter-6","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/chapter-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28580\" class=\"text Mark-6-1\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">6\u00a0<\/span>He went away from there and came to his own country; and his disciples followed him. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Jesus returns to Nazareth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28581\" class=\"text Mark-6-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>And on the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard him were astonished, saying, \u201cWhere did this man get all this? What is the wisdom given to him? What mighty works are wrought by his hands!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">They are amazed both by what He says and does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28582\" class=\"text Mark-6-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">The people are indignant because they know who Jesus is, where He comes from and think of Him as nothing special.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">The identity of the <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;James and Joses&#8221;<\/span> will be revealed at the Crucifixion. All of these <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;brothers&#8221;<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;sisters&#8221;<\/span> were close relatives, not other children of Mary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28582\" class=\"text Mark-6-3\">And they took offense\u00a0at him. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28583\" class=\"text Mark-6-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus said to them, \u201cA prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28584\" class=\"text Mark-6-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands upon a few sick people and healed them.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28585\" class=\"text Mark-6-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>And he marveled because of their unbelief.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\">Their rejection of Jesus is an impediment to His work there.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Mark-6-6\" style=\"color: #993300\">And he went about among the villages teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus leaves and goes elsewhere.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28586\" class=\"text Mark-6-7\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Mission of the Twelve<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the first piece of &#8220;bread&#8221; in the Marken sandwich (intercalation)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This pattern of going in twos was continued later in the Church and possibly even has a previous Jewish tradition. There might also be an allusion to Noah and the ark.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives His followers authority.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28587\" class=\"text Mark-6-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28588\" class=\"text Mark-6-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The mission was to include trust in the providence of God.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28589\" class=\"text Mark-6-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cWhere you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They were not to move around, upgrading to newer and nicer houses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28590\" class=\"text Mark-6-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jews would typically shake the dust off their feet when leaving Gentile territory, so as to not be polluted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28591\" class=\"text Mark-6-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>So they went out and preached that men should repent. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The disciples continue to preach the message of John the Baptist and Jesus &#8211; repentance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28592\" class=\"text Mark-6-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like Jesus, they are mighty in word and deed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28593\" class=\"text Mark-6-14\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Death of John the Baptist<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the meat of the Marken Sandwich.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>King Herod heard of it; for Jesus\u2019\u00a0name had become known. Some\u00a0said, \u201cJohn the baptizer has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28594\" class=\"text Mark-6-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>But others said, \u201cIt is Eli\u2032jah.\u201d And others said, \u201cIt is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Confusion about Jesus&#8217; identity continues.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28595\" class=\"text Mark-6-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>But when Herod heard of it he said, \u201cJohn, whom I beheaded, has been raised.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>King Heord, who was the puppet king of the Romans was convinced that Jesus was John.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28595\" class=\"text Mark-6-16\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28596\" class=\"text Mark-6-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Hero\u2032di-as, his brother Philip\u2019s wife; because he had married her. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28597\" class=\"text Mark-6-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>For John said to Herod, \u201cIt is not lawful for you to have your brother\u2019s wife.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>John had been rebuking the king for taking his brother&#8217;s wife. For this he was imprisoned.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28598\" class=\"text Mark-6-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>And Hero\u2032di-as had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Herod&#8217;s new wife wanted John not just imprisoned, but silenced completely.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28598\" class=\"text Mark-6-19\"> But she could not, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28599\" class=\"text Mark-6-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Herod would not do as his wife wished because, deep down, he knew John was a holy man, a prophet.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28600\" class=\"text Mark-6-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This will be the reason that Jehovah Witnesses don&#8217;t celebrate birthdays&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28601\" class=\"text Mark-6-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>For when Hero\u2032di-as\u2019 daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, \u201cAsk me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28602\" class=\"text Mark-6-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>And he vowed to her, \u201cWhatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Herod blindly promises Herodias&#8217; daughter whatever she wants.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28602\" class=\"text Mark-6-23\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28603\" class=\"text Mark-6-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>And she went out, and said to her mother, \u201cWhat shall I ask?\u201d And she said, \u201cThe head of John the baptizer.\u201d<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28604\" class=\"text Mark-6-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, \u201cI want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Herodias seizes this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28605\" class=\"text Mark-6-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The king had backed himself into a corner.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28605\" class=\"text Mark-6-26\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28606\" class=\"text Mark-6-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28607\" class=\"text Mark-6-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28608\" class=\"text Mark-6-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>John is executed and buried by his disciples.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28609\" class=\"text Mark-6-30\" style=\"color: #993300\">Feeding the Five Thousand<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the second piece of bread in the Marken Sandwich.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The apostles come back victorious from their mission. Remember John&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28610\" class=\"text Mark-6-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cCome away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.\u201d For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28611\" class=\"text Mark-6-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>And they went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus wanted to take his disciples on a retreat to recharge.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28612\" class=\"text Mark-6-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>Now many saw them going, and knew them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns, and got there ahead of them. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The people find out where they&#8217;re going.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28613\" class=\"text Mark-6-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>As he landed he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus feels compassion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28614\" class=\"text Mark-6-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, \u201cThis is a lonely place, and the hour is now late; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28615\" class=\"text Mark-6-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>send them away, to go into the country and villages round about and buy themselves something to eat.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28616\" class=\"text Mark-6-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>But he answered them, \u201cYou give them something to eat.\u201d And they said to him, \u201cShall we go and buy two hundred denarii<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em;line-height: 22px;vertical-align: top\">[<a style=\"color: #993300\" title=\"See footnote d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mark+6&amp;version=RSVCE#fen-RSVCE-28616d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup> worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus tells His disciples to feed the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28617\" class=\"text Mark-6-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cHow many loaves have you? Go and see.\u201d And when they had found out, they said, \u201cFive, and two fish.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The five loaves are typically seen as a reference to the Torah, appropriate since we are currently in Jewish territory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28618\" class=\"text Mark-6-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>Then he commanded them all to sit down by companies upon the green grass. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is an echo of Moses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28619\" class=\"text Mark-6-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28620\" class=\"text Mark-6-41\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41\u00a0<\/sup>And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mark presents us with some verbs which we&#8217;ll see again shortly and again at the Last Supper: <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;[took]&#8230;blessed&#8230;broke&#8230;gave&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28620\" class=\"text Mark-6-41\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28621\" class=\"text Mark-6-42\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42\u00a0<\/sup>And they all ate and were satisfied. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t just get a bit to eat, they are satisfied.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28622\" class=\"text Mark-6-43\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43\u00a0<\/sup>And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Twelve is symbolic of the twelve tribes of Israel.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28622\" class=\"text Mark-6-43\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28623\" class=\"text Mark-6-44\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44\u00a0<\/sup>And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not including women and children.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28624\" class=\"text Mark-6-45\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus Walks on the Water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-45\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Immediately<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-45\">&#8230;he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Beth-sa\u2032ida, while he dismissed the crowd. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28625\" class=\"text Mark-6-46\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46\u00a0<\/sup>And after he had taken leave of them, he went up into the hills to pray. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus sends the disciples away and then takes time to pray by Himself.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28626\" class=\"text Mark-6-47\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47\u00a0<\/sup>And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28627\" class=\"text Mark-6-48\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48\u00a0<\/sup>And he saw that they were distressed in rowing, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus has control over His own body.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28627\" class=\"text Mark-6-48\">He meant to pass by them, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28628\" class=\"text Mark-6-49\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49\u00a0<\/sup>but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28629\" class=\"text Mark-6-50\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50\u00a0<\/sup>for they all saw him, and were terrified. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The disciples see Him and are afraid.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28629\" class=\"text Mark-6-50\">But immediately&#8230; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Immediately&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28629\" class=\"text Mark-6-50\">&#8230;he spoke to them and said, \u201cTake heart, it is I; have no fear.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28630\" class=\"text Mark-6-51\"><sup class=\"versenum\">51\u00a0<\/sup>And he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He also has control over the elements.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28630\" class=\"text Mark-6-51\"> And they were utterly astounded, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28631\" class=\"text Mark-6-52\"><sup class=\"versenum\">52\u00a0<\/sup>for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This last line is cryptic but powerful. Could it be that He&#8217;s preparing them for the Eucharist?<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28632\" class=\"text Mark-6-53\" style=\"color: #993300\">Healing the Sick in Gennesaret<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-6-53\"><sup class=\"versenum\">53\u00a0<\/sup>And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennes\u2032aret, and moored to the shore. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28633\" class=\"text Mark-6-54\"><sup class=\"versenum\">54\u00a0<\/sup>And when they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized him, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28634\" class=\"text Mark-6-55\"><sup class=\"versenum\">55\u00a0<\/sup>and ran about the whole neighborhood and began to bring sick people on their pallets to any place where they heard he was.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28635\" class=\"text Mark-6-56\"><sup class=\"versenum\">56\u00a0<\/sup>And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or country, they laid the sick in the market places, and besought him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus heals many.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Mark\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/\">Return to Chapter Index<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth 6\u00a0He went away from there and came to his own country; and his disciples followed him.
