{"id":51842,"date":"2014-12-16T16:12:43","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T23:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=51842"},"modified":"2014-12-16T16:13:39","modified_gmt":"2014-12-16T23:13:39","slug":"chapter-9","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/chapter-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28710\" class=\"text Mark-9-1\" style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"chapternum mid-paragraph\">9\u00a0<\/span><sup class=\"versenum mid-paragraph\">1\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cTruly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This points to the redeeming work of Christ. It could also point to the destruction of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28711\" class=\"text Mark-9-2\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Transfiguration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The inner circle<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-2\">&#8230;and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the Bible important things happen on mountains. It is where God is encountered and covenants are made.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-2\">&#8230;and he was transfigured before them, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28712\" class=\"text Mark-9-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>and his garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is an echo and an elevation of Moses on Mount Sinai.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28712\" class=\"text Mark-9-3\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28713\" class=\"text Mark-9-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And there appeared to them Eli\u2032jah with Moses; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Representative of the Law and the Prophets.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the idea that both are body and soul since Elijah was assumed, and Moses died and then assumed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28713\" class=\"text Mark-9-4\">&#8230;and they were talking to Jesus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the other Gospels we find out that they were talking about his departure (exhodus) and suffering.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28713\" class=\"text Mark-9-4\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28714\" class=\"text Mark-9-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>And Peter said to Jesus, \u201cMaster,\u00a0it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli\u2032jah.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28715\" class=\"text Mark-9-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Peter wanted to continue the mountaintop experience.<\/p>\n<p>It was probably around the Feast of Booths too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28715\" class=\"text Mark-9-6\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28716\" class=\"text Mark-9-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, \u201cThis is my beloved Son;<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em;line-height: 22px;vertical-align: top\">[<a style=\"color: #993300\" title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mark+9&amp;version=RSVCE#fen-RSVCE-28716b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup> listen to him.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a theophany. The Trinity is present. The Spirit is represented by the glory cloud, the Father speaks in a voice and the Son is Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28716\" class=\"text Mark-9-7\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28717\" class=\"text Mark-9-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And suddenly looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to go down the mountain.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28718\" class=\"text Mark-9-9\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Coming of Elijah<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of man should have risen from the dead.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus continues trying to keep things on the down low.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28719\" class=\"text Mark-9-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite everything they had seen, they still had no clue.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28719\" class=\"text Mark-9-10\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28720\" class=\"text Mark-9-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And they asked him, \u201cWhy do the scribes say that first Eli\u2032jah must come?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Jews understood that before the Messiah came, Elijah would come back (he was assumed into heaven).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28720\" class=\"text Mark-9-11\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28721\" class=\"text Mark-9-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cEli\u2032jah does come first to restore all things; and how is it written of the Son of man, that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28722\" class=\"text Mark-9-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>But I tell you that Eli\u2032jah has come,\u00a0and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus is referring to John the Baptist.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28723\" class=\"text Mark-9-14\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Healing of a Boy with a Spirit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd about them, and scribes arguing with them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, people had been picking fights.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28724\" class=\"text Mark-9-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and ran up to him and greeted him. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28725\" class=\"text Mark-9-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>And he asked them, \u201cWhat are you discussing with them?\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28726\" class=\"text Mark-9-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>And one of the crowd answered him, \u201cTeacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28727\" class=\"text Mark-9-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>and wherever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; disciples had been unable to heal this boy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28728\" class=\"text Mark-9-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>And he answered them, \u201cO faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus rebukes them.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28728\" class=\"text Mark-9-19\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28729\" class=\"text Mark-9-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28730\" class=\"text Mark-9-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em;line-height: 22px;vertical-align: top\">[<a style=\"color: #993300\" title=\"See footnote d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mark+9&amp;version=RSVCE#fen-RSVCE-28730d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup> asked his father, \u201cHow long has he had this?\u201d And he said, \u201cFrom childhood. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28731\" class=\"text Mark-9-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This had been a long-lasting condition.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28731\" class=\"text Mark-9-22\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28732\" class=\"text Mark-9-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus said to him, \u201cIf you can! All things are possible to him who believes.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus calls the father to faith.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28733\" class=\"text Mark-9-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately the father of the child cried out\u00a0and said, \u201cI believe; help my unbelief!\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is the cry of every believer to have God increase our faith.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28734\" class=\"text Mark-9-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, \u201cYou dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again.\u201d<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28735\" class=\"text Mark-9-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, \u201cHe is dead.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28736\" class=\"text Mark-9-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus does what His disciples could not.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28737\" class=\"text Mark-9-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, \u201cWhy could we not cast it out?\u201d<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28738\" class=\"text Mark-9-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to them, \u201cThis kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here we see a very strong link between prayer, fasting and healing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28739\" class=\"text Mark-9-30\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus Again Foretells His Death and Resurrection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28740\" class=\"text Mark-9-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, \u201cThe Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28741\" class=\"text Mark-9-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is the second prediction. Each prediction increases in detail.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28742\" class=\"text Mark-9-33\" style=\"color: #993300\">Who Is the Greatest?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>And they came to Caper\u2032na-um; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; base of operations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-33\">&#8230;and when he was in the house he asked them, \u201cWhat were you discussing on the way?\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28743\" class=\"text Mark-9-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a repeated pattern in this Gospel. The Twelve seek for their own glory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28743\" class=\"text Mark-9-34\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28744\" class=\"text Mark-9-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, \u201cIf any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus turns their notions of greatness on its head.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28744\" class=\"text Mark-9-35\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28745\" class=\"text Mark-9-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>And he took a child, and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said to them, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28746\" class=\"text Mark-9-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives an example using a child. This will be repeated once more in the next chapter.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28747\" class=\"text Mark-9-38\" style=\"color: #993300\">Another Exorcist<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>John said to him, \u201cTeacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name,\u00a0and we forbade him, because he was not following us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why did the disciples do this? Were they afraid that this man was taking glory away from them?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28748\" class=\"text Mark-9-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus said, \u201cDo not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28749\" class=\"text Mark-9-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>For he that is not against us is for us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus saw this man as united with them in the fight against evil.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28750\" class=\"text Mark-9-41\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41\u00a0<\/sup>For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A great promise.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28751\" class=\"text Mark-9-42\" style=\"color: #993300\">Temptations to Sin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-9-42\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,\u00a0it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives a serious warning against anyone who would lead others astry.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28752\" class=\"text Mark-9-43\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43\u00a0<\/sup>And if your hand causes you to sin,\u00a0cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell,\u00a0to the unquenchable fire.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus explains that it is better to suffer loss in this life than retain evil in your life and suffer punishment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28753\" class=\"text Mark-9-45\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45\u00a0<\/sup>And if your foot causes you to sin,\u00a0cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He now goes from hand\u00a0to foot.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28754\" class=\"text Mark-9-47\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47\u00a0<\/sup>And if your eye causes you to sin,\u00a0pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28755\" class=\"text Mark-9-48\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48\u00a0<\/sup>where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and now eyes. Morally we can apply this to any kind of evil\/sin in our lives.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28756\" class=\"text Mark-9-49\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49\u00a0<\/sup>For every one will be salted with fire.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28757\" class=\"text Mark-9-50\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50\u00a0<\/sup>Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its saltness, how will you season it?
