{"id":51823,"date":"2014-12-16T13:10:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T20:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=51823"},"modified":"2014-12-16T17:51:37","modified_gmt":"2014-12-17T00:51:37","slug":"chapter-11","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/chapter-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28810\" class=\"text Mark-11-1\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus\u2019 Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-11-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">11\u00a0<\/span>And when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Beth\u2032phage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28811\" class=\"text Mark-11-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>and said to them, \u201cGo into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and bring it. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28812\" class=\"text Mark-11-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>If any one says to you, \u2018Why are you doing this?\u2019 say, \u2018The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.\u2019\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28813\" class=\"text Mark-11-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door out in the open street; and they untied it. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28814\" class=\"text Mark-11-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>And those who stood there said to them, \u201cWhat are you doing, untying the colt?\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28815\" class=\"text Mark-11-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>And they told them what Jesus had said; and they let them go.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">All comes to pass as Jesus predicted. If He knew about this, do you think He knew about the events of Good Friday?<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28815\" class=\"text Mark-11-6\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28816\" class=\"text Mark-11-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And they brought the colt to Jesus, and threw their garments on it; and he sat upon it. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28817\" class=\"text Mark-11-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And many spread their garments on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">A sign of homage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">Palms were a sign of victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28817\" class=\"text Mark-11-8\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28818\" class=\"text Mark-11-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>And those who went before and those who followed cried out, \u201cHosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28819\" class=\"text Mark-11-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">Hosanna means &#8220;Save us&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">They identify Jesus as the son of David. His entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey is reminiscent of Solomon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">The donkey is a sign of humility (as opposed to a war horse)<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28820\" class=\"text Mark-11-11\" style=\"color: #993300\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And he entered Jerusalem, and went into the temple; &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Lord comes to His temple.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28820\" class=\"text Mark-11-11\" style=\"color: #993300\">&#8230;and when he had looked round at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He leaves Jerusalem for the night.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28821\" class=\"text Mark-11-12\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus Curses the Fig Tree<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the first piece of bread in the Marken sandwich.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-11-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28822\" class=\"text Mark-11-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28823\" class=\"text Mark-11-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to it, \u201cMay no one ever eat fruit from you again.\u201d And his disciples heard it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus knew that it wasn&#8217;t the season for figs.\u00a0This is an enacted parable. He is showing that the Lord visits us when we least expect it. Regardless of the season, we should be producing fruit (Psalm 1).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28824\" class=\"text Mark-11-15\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus Cleanses the Temple<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the meat of the Marken sandwich.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-11-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28825\" class=\"text Mark-11-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>and he would not allow any one to carry anything through the temple.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>These people were hear to sell animals for sacrifice and to convert the pagan money.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28825\" class=\"text Mark-11-16\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28826\" class=\"text Mark-11-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>And he taught, and said to them, \u201cIs it not written, \u2018My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations\u2019? But you have made it a den of robbers.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah called the temple this before.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28826\" class=\"text Mark-11-17\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28827\" class=\"text Mark-11-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and sought a way to destroy him; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Because He was causing a disturbance and ruining business.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28827\" class=\"text Mark-11-18\">&#8230;for they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like John the Baptist, Jesus was a popular figure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28827\" class=\"text Mark-11-18\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28828\" class=\"text Mark-11-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>And when evening came they\u00a0went out of the city.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They head back to Bethany.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28829\" class=\"text Mark-11-20\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the second\u00a0piece of bread in the Marken sandwich.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-11-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus had come to the temple and didn&#8217;t find fruit&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28830\" class=\"text Mark-11-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>And Peter remembered and said to him, \u201cMaster,\u00a0look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I love the fact that they point this out to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28830\" class=\"text Mark-11-21\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28831\" class=\"text Mark-11-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus answered them, \u201cHave faith in God. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28832\" class=\"text Mark-11-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mount Zion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28832\" class=\"text Mark-11-23\">&#8230; \u2018Be taken up and cast into the sea,\u2019 &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A typical symbol for the Gentiles<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28832\" class=\"text Mark-11-23\">&#8230;and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28833\" class=\"text Mark-11-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An exhortation to belief.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28833\" class=\"text Mark-11-24\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28834\" class=\"text Mark-11-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against any one; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Reiteration to forgiveness.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28835\" class=\"text Mark-11-27\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus\u2019 Authority Is Questioned<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-11-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28836\" class=\"text Mark-11-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>and they said to him, \u201cBy what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They want to know how He can justify cleansing the temple. Is He a prophet?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28836\" class=\"text Mark-11-28\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28837\" class=\"text Mark-11-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cI will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus says he&#8217;ll tell them if they answer something first&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28837\" class=\"text Mark-11-29\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28838\" class=\"text Mark-11-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?
