{"id":51818,"date":"2014-12-16T13:01:49","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T20:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=51818"},"modified":"2014-12-16T17:52:04","modified_gmt":"2014-12-17T00:52:04","slug":"chapter-12","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/chapter-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28842\" class=\"text Mark-12-1\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Parable of the Wicked Tenants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">12\u00a0<\/span>And he began to speak to them in parables.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">In the Bible, parables are told when speaking against corrupt rulers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-1\"> \u201cA man&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">God, the Father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-1\">&#8230;planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the wine press, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">This is Jerusalem\/Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-1\">&#8230;and built a tower, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">The Temple<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-1\">&#8230;and let it out to tenants, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">The children of Israel (and their leaders in particular).<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-1\">&#8230;and went into another country.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">God &#8220;went away&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28843\" class=\"text Mark-12-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>When the time came, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">God calling to account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28843\" class=\"text Mark-12-2\">&#8230;he sent a servant to the tenants, to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28844\" class=\"text Mark-12-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28845\" class=\"text Mark-12-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28846\" class=\"text Mark-12-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">These are the prophets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28846\" class=\"text Mark-12-5\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28847\" class=\"text Mark-12-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, \u2018They will respect my son.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">Jesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28847\" class=\"text Mark-12-6\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28848\" class=\"text Mark-12-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>But those tenants said to one another, \u2018This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.\u2019 <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28849\" class=\"text Mark-12-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">A prophecy of the\u00a0crucifixion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28849\" class=\"text Mark-12-8\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28850\" class=\"text Mark-12-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">Pointing towards a New Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28850\" class=\"text Mark-12-9\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28851\" class=\"text Mark-12-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Have you not read this scripture:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-10\" style=\"color: #993300\">\u2018The very stone which the builders rejected<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Mark-12-10\" style=\"color: #993300\">has become the head of the corner;<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-RSVCE-28852\" class=\"text Mark-12-11\" style=\"color: #993300\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>this was the Lord\u2019s doing,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Mark-12-11\" style=\"color: #993300\">and it is marvelous in our eyes\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\">Jesus is referring to Himself as this <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;stone which the builders rejected&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28853\" class=\"text Mark-12-12\" style=\"color: #993300\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>And they tried to arrest him, but feared the multitude, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them; so they left him and went away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like John the Baptist, Jesus was a popular figure.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28854\" class=\"text Mark-12-13\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Question about Paying Taxes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Hero\u2032di-ans, to entrap him in his talk.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>These two were natural enemies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28855\" class=\"text Mark-12-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>And they came and said to him, \u201cTeacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sucking up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28855\" class=\"text Mark-12-14\">&#8230;Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28856\" class=\"text Mark-12-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Should we pay them, or should we not?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If Jesus says &#8220;yes&#8221;, then he&#8217;ll be called a traitor by the Pharisees. If he says &#8220;no&#8221; , then he&#8217;ll be called a seditionist by the Herodeans.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28856\" class=\"text Mark-12-15\">But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, \u201cWhy put me to the test? Bring me a coin,\u00a0and let me look at it.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28857\" class=\"text Mark-12-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>And they brought one. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Notice that they are the ones with the coin, not Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28857\" class=\"text Mark-12-16\">And he said to them, \u201cWhose likeness and inscription is this?\u201d They said to him, \u201cCaesar\u2019s.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Jews didn&#8217;t like this because (a) it was an image (b) it was a symbol of Roman domination and (c) it was blasphemous since it attributed divinity to Ceasar.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28857\" class=\"text Mark-12-16\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28858\" class=\"text Mark-12-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cRender to Caesar the things that are Caesar\u2019s, and to God the things that are God\u2019s.\u201d And they were amazed at him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are made in God&#8217;s likeness and image (Genesis). Therefore everything we have belongs to God.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28859\" class=\"text Mark-12-18\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Question about the Resurrection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And Sad\u2032ducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This fact is important.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-18\">&#8230;and they asked him a question, saying, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28860\" class=\"text Mark-12-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTeacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man\u2019s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man\u00a0must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is found in Leviticus<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28860\" class=\"text Mark-12-19\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28861\" class=\"text Mark-12-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28862\" class=\"text Mark-12-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>and the second took her, and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28863\" class=\"text Mark-12-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>and the seven left no children. Last of all the woman also died. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28864\" class=\"text Mark-12-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re trying to demonstrate that the doctrine of the Resurrection makes no sense.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28865\" class=\"text Mark-12-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cIs not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This could be a jab at the fact that the Sadducees only accepted the first five books of Moses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28865\" class=\"text Mark-12-24\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28866\" class=\"text Mark-12-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In terms of marriage, humans will be like angels.<\/p>\n<p>This passage is not saying that humans become angels upon death.<\/p>\n<p>Marriage comes to an end in Heaven because the sign has been replaced with the reality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28866\" class=\"text Mark-12-25\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28867\" class=\"text Mark-12-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, \u2018I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob\u2019? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28868\" class=\"text Mark-12-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus then demonstrates the Resurrection using the only Scriptures they recognize.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28869\" class=\"text Mark-12-28\" style=\"color: #993300\">The First Commandment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, \u201cWhich commandment is the first of all?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was a favourite question of the time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28870\" class=\"text Mark-12-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cThe first is, \u2018Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28871\" class=\"text Mark-12-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus answers with Deuteronomy, the Shema, the prayer prayed by Jews each day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28871\" class=\"text Mark-12-30\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28872\" class=\"text Mark-12-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>The second is this, \u2018You shall love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is from Leviticus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28872\" class=\"text Mark-12-31\">There is no other commandment greater than these.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paul will later say that upon these two commands depends the Law and the Prophets.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28872\" class=\"text Mark-12-31\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28873\" class=\"text Mark-12-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>And the scribe said to him, \u201cYou are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and there is no other but he; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28874\" class=\"text Mark-12-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one\u2019s neighbor as oneself, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The scribe likes this answer.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28874\" class=\"text Mark-12-33\">&#8230;is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a theme repeated by the prophets.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28874\" class=\"text Mark-12-33\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28875\" class=\"text Mark-12-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, \u201cYou are not far from the kingdom of God.\u201d And after that no one dared to ask him any question.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a complement, albeit a rather backhanded one.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28876\" class=\"text Mark-12-35\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Question about David\u2019s Son<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus is now going to ask His own question&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-35\">&#8230;\u201cHow can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28877\" class=\"text Mark-12-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>David himself, inspired by<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em;line-height: 22px;vertical-align: top\">[<a style=\"color: #993300\" title=\"See footnote c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mark+12&amp;version=RSVCE#fen-RSVCE-28877c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup> the Holy Spirit, declared,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-36\" style=\"color: #993300\">\u2018The Lord said to my Lord,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Mark-12-36\" style=\"color: #993300\">Sit at my right hand,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Mark-12-36\" style=\"color: #993300\">till I put thy enemies under thy feet.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"first-line-none\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28878\" class=\"text Mark-12-37\" style=\"color: #993300\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?\u201d And the great throng heard him gladly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-none\">Jesus shows that there are problems with their understanding of what to expect in the Messiah.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28879\" class=\"text Mark-12-38\" style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus Denounces the Scribes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>And in his teaching he said, \u201cBeware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28880\" class=\"text Mark-12-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28881\" class=\"text Mark-12-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>who devour widows\u2019 houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus complains about their self-seeking attitude and the way they drain the poor dry. This is important for what comes next&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28882\" class=\"text Mark-12-41\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Widow\u2019s Offering<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-12-41\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41\u00a0<\/sup>And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28883\" class=\"text Mark-12-42\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42\u00a0<\/sup>And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28884\" class=\"text Mark-12-43\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43\u00a0<\/sup>And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, \u201cTruly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28885\" class=\"text Mark-12-44\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44\u00a0<\/sup>For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus makes the point that this woman was far more generous.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is also a condemnation against the religious officials who were bleeding the people dry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Mark\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/\">Return to Chapter Index<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Parable of the Wicked Tenants 12\u00a0And he began to speak to them in parables.
