{"id":51811,"date":"2014-12-16T12:21:47","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T19:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=51811"},"modified":"2014-12-16T12:38:48","modified_gmt":"2014-12-16T19:38:48","slug":"chapter-13","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/mark\/chapter-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28886\" class=\"text Mark-13-1\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Destruction of the Temple Foretold<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">13\u00a0<\/span>And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, \u201cLook, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">The temple was a wonder. Herod the Great had done major rebuilding work on the temple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28887\" class=\"text Mark-13-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus said to him, \u201cDo you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\">It&#8217;s not going to last.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28888\" class=\"text Mark-13-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is known as the &#8220;Olivette Discourse&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28888\" class=\"text Mark-13-3\">&#8230;Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; inner circle.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28888\" class=\"text Mark-13-3\">&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28889\" class=\"text Mark-13-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign when these things are all to be accomplished?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They ask what will be the sign given prior to the Temple&#8217;s destruction.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28889\" class=\"text Mark-13-4\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28890\" class=\"text Mark-13-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus began to say to them, \u201cTake heed that no one leads you astray. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28891\" class=\"text Mark-13-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>Many will come in my name, saying, \u2018I am he!\u2019 and they will lead many astray.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There will be false Christs. There were many in the First Century. In fact, the destruction of Jerusalem took place after a Jewish rebellion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28892\" class=\"text Mark-13-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is not yet. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28893\" class=\"text Mark-13-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places, there will be famines; this is but the beginning of the sufferings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Great suffering. This took place prior to Jerusalem&#8217;s destruction, as we read in Josephus.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28894\" class=\"text Mark-13-9\" style=\"color: #993300\">Persecution Foretold<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut take heed to yourselves; for they will deliver you up to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28895\" class=\"text Mark-13-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is all acted out in Acts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28895\" class=\"text Mark-13-10\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28896\" class=\"text Mark-13-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And when they bring you to trial and deliver you up, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say; but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have examples of this in Acts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28896\" class=\"text Mark-13-11\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28897\" class=\"text Mark-13-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>And brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28898\" class=\"text Mark-13-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>and you will be hated by all for my name\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is the division of which Jesus previously spoke.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28898\" class=\"text Mark-13-13\"> But he who endures to the end will be saved.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not going to be pleasant, but salvation is for those who overcome. It should be noted, however, that this doesn&#8217;t mean that you&#8217;ll escape death.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28899\" class=\"text Mark-13-14\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Desolating Sacrilege<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a reference to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-14\">&#8230;then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is what the Early Christians did. They fled to Pella and thereby were saved from the massacre that took place in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-14\">&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28900\" class=\"text Mark-13-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything away; <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28901\" class=\"text Mark-13-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his mantle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Put simply, when you see this stuff, just run.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28902\" class=\"text Mark-13-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>And alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28903\" class=\"text Mark-13-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>Pray that it may not happen in winter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Because it will make the flight harder.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28904\" class=\"text Mark-13-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28905\" class=\"text Mark-13-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>God&#8217;s mercy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28905\" class=\"text Mark-13-20\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28906\" class=\"text Mark-13-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>And then if any one says to you, \u2018Look, here is the Christ!\u2019 or \u2018Look, there he is!\u2019 do not believe it.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28907\" class=\"text Mark-13-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>False Christs and false prophets will arise and show signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28908\" class=\"text Mark-13-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>But take heed; I have told you all things beforehand.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He began with warnings of false Christs and this is again repeated.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28909\" class=\"text Mark-13-24\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Coming of the Son of Man<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28910\" class=\"text Mark-13-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is Biblical language for the falling of a city or nation.<\/p>\n<p>Time is up.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28910\" class=\"text Mark-13-25\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28911\" class=\"text Mark-13-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>And then they will see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is Biblical language for God&#8217;s coming judgement.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28912\" class=\"text Mark-13-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>And then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>God will save His people.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28913\" class=\"text Mark-13-28\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Lesson of the Fig Tree<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cFrom the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28914\" class=\"text Mark-13-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you see the signs, be ready.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28914\" class=\"text Mark-13-29\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28915\" class=\"text Mark-13-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away before all these things take place.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A biblical generation is forty years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28915\" class=\"text Mark-13-30\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28916\" class=\"text Mark-13-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a promise.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also possibly an interesting parallel between the passing away of the\u00a0Jerusalem temple, the passing away of the cosmic temple (<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;heaven and earth&#8221;<\/span>) and the perseverance of the Christological temple (<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;my words will not pass away&#8221;<\/span>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28917\" class=\"text Mark-13-32\" style=\"color: #993300\">The Necessity for Watchfulness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text Mark-13-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The sign of any cult is when they say that they know when the end is going to be.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <span id=\"en-RSVCE-28918\" class=\"text Mark-13-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>Take heed, watch and pray;\u00a0for you do not know when the time will come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus calls for vigilance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28918\" class=\"text Mark-13-33\"> <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28919\" class=\"text Mark-13-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28920\" class=\"text Mark-13-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>Watch therefore\u2014for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning\u2014 <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28921\" class=\"text Mark-13-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28922\" class=\"text Mark-13-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>And what I say to you I say to all: Watch.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives a parable to drive home the point.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Mark\"
