{"id":40748,"date":"2014-07-17T16:45:40","date_gmt":"2014-07-17T23:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=40748"},"modified":"2014-12-04T00:00:31","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T07:00:31","slug":"chapter-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/1-thessalonians\/chapter-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"font-weight: 500;color: #000000\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33730\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-1\" style=\"color: #993300\">Paul\u2019s Ministry in Thessalonica<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text 1Thess-2-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">2\u00a0<\/span>For you yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to you was not in vain;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33731\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-2\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">2\u00a0<\/span>but though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of great opposition.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\" style=\"color: #000000\">These events are recounted in Acts<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33732\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-3\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">3\u00a0<\/span>For our appeal does not spring from error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33733\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-4\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">4\u00a0<\/span>but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33734\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-5\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">5\u00a0<\/span>For we never used either words of flattery, as you know, or a cloak for greed, as God is witness;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33735\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-6\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">6\u00a0<\/span>nor did we seek glory from men, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\" style=\"color: #000000\">Paul speaks about how they\u00a0<strong>didn&#8217;t<\/strong> act<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33736\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-7\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">7\u00a0<\/span>But we were gentle<span class=\"footnote\">[<a style=\"color: #b34b2c\" title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+thessalonians+2&amp;version=RSVCE#fen-RSVCE-33736a\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">a<\/span><\/a>]<\/span>\u00a0among you, like a nurse taking care of her children.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33737\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-8\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">8\u00a0<\/span>So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\" style=\"color: #000000\">Paul speaks about how they\u00a0<strong>did<\/strong> act, with loving (maternal) care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33738\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-9\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">9\u00a0<\/span>For you remember our labor and toil, brethren; we worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you, while we preached to you the gospel of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">So as to not unduly burden the Thessalonian community, they supported themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33739\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-10\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10\u00a0<\/span>You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our behavior to you believers;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33740\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-11\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11\u00a0<\/span>for you know how, like a father with his children, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">Now a masculine, fatherly image<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33740\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-11\">&#8230;we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33741\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-12\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12\u00a0<\/span>to lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">The Christian calling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33742\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-13\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13\u00a0<\/span>And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">They heard the Gospel proclaimed orally (this text was most likely the first text of the New eEstament to be written).<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33743\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-14\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14\u00a0<\/span>For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus which are in Judea; for you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33744\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-15\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15\u00a0<\/span>who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">This is recorded in Acts. The Church at Thessalonica mimicks the founding Church in Judea, as well as the Lord and the prophets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33744\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-15\">&#8230; and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all men\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33745\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-16\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">16\u00a0<\/span>by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they may be saved\u2014so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But God\u2019s wrath has come upon them at last!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">Reference to the Judaizers<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 500;color: #000000\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33746\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-17\" style=\"color: #993300\">Paul\u2019s Desire to Visit the Thessalonians Again<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text 1Thess-2-17\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">17\u00a0<\/span>But since we were bereft of you, brethren, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33747\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-18\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">18\u00a0<\/span>because we wanted to come to you\u2014I, Paul,\u00a0again and again\u2014 &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">They had to leave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33747\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-18\">&#8230;but Satan hindered us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\">Some kind of opposition prevented them from coming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-33748\" class=\"text 1Thess-2-19\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">19\u00a0<\/span>For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming?
