James, the son of Zebedee. Martyred AD 44 (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%2012:2&amp;version=NIV\">Acts 12:2<\/a>)<br \/>\n2. James, the son of Alphaeus. Little is known about him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Family<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">3. James of Jerusalem (&#8220;James the Just&#8221;). This one is favoured. He was Jesus&#8217; kinsman (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%206:3&amp;version=NIV\">Mark 6:3<\/a>). Resurrection Witness (see 1 Cor 15:7). <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Pillar of the Church&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Gal%202:9&amp;version=NIV\">Gal 2:9<\/a>).\u00a0Tradition tells us that he was Bishop of Jerusalem and Martyred in AD 62 (Stoned, clubbed or thrown off the Temple)<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Date<\/h2>\n<p>Here is a rough timeline:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">~30 AD: Jesus&#8217; Ministry<br \/>\n~40 AD<br \/>\n~50 AD: Council of Jeruaslem<br \/>\n<strong>~60 AD: Epistle of James<\/strong><br \/>\n~70 AD: Jerusalem Temple\u00a0Destroyed<\/p>\n<h2>Recipients<\/h2>\n<p>The letter is addressed to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;the twelve tribes scattered among the nations&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. There are three possible\u00a0interpretations\u00a0for this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1. Exiled Hebrew Christians (The used in the text is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.searchgodsword.org\/isb\/view.cgi?number=1290\">diaspora<\/a>)<br \/>\n2. Christians fleeing persecution<br \/>\n3. Universal Church scattered throughout the world<\/p>\n<p>I prefer (3) as it\u00a0encompasses (1) and (2) and makes it addressed to us too \ud83d\ude42 Either way, this letter is grouped in the Bible with the Catholic (universal) epistles.<\/p>\n<h2>Literary Forms<\/h2>\n<p>The document includes several different literary forms:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">* Letter (The opening)<br \/>\n* Homily (The exhorations)<br \/>\n* Diatribe (The &#8220;conversational&#8221; parts)<br \/>\n* Wisdom (Proverbs and illustrations)<br \/>\n* Judgement Oracles (warnings)<\/p>\n<h2>Main Themes<\/h2>\n<p>The central themes of James include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1. Practical aspects of religious life (speech, charity, behaviour etc) drawing on\u00a0Jesus&#8217; teaching from Matthew&#8217;s Gospel<br \/>\n2.
