Sunday School: 24-Jan-2015

If you’re a regular visitor to this site, you’ll know that there are certain kinds posts which regularly appear each week. There’s “Music Monday” where I post some Christian music which I have been enjoying that week. There’s “Wise Words on Wednesday” where I share a quotation which I find insightful. Finally, there’s “Friday Frivolity” where I post a joke, goofy video or funny image. 

Well, today I’d like to introduce a new staple to Restless Pilgrim: “Sunday School”. For a while now I’ve been reading the catechesis material produced in my parish for the teens and been very impressed. I’ve asked those involved for their permission and they’ve graciously agreed for me to post it here each week so that it can reach a wider audience.

At the moment, the teens are reviewing the material from the previous weeks, but here are the notes concerning the Saints and martyrs from this week…

Jan 17 – Our Holy Father Anthony the Great

Anthony was an Egyptian and was born about the year 250 A.D. in the village of Koman near Herculea. Following the demise of his noble and wealthy parents, he divided the inherited estate with his sister, who was a minor, and provided for her with some relatives. Anthony distributed his half of the estate to the poor and, he, in his twentieth year, dedicated himself to the ascetical life for which he yearned from his childhood.

In the beginning Anthony lived a life of asceticism in the proximity of his village but, in order to flee the disturbances of people, he withdrew into the wilderness on the shore of the Red Sea, where he spent twenty years as a recluse not associating with anyone except with God through constant prayer, reflection and contemplation, patiently enduring unspeakable temptations from the devil. His fame spread throughout the entire world and many disciples gathered around him whom he placed on the path of salvation by his example and words.

During the eighty-five years of his ascetical life, only twice did he go to Alexandria. The first time to seek martyrdom during the time of the persecution of the Church and, the second time at the invitation of St. Athanasius, in order to refute the accusation of the Arians: supposedly that he, too, was an adherent of the Arian heresy.

Anthony died in the one-hundred fifth year of his life, leaving behind an entire army of his disciples and imitators. Even though Anthony was not a scholar, nevertheless, he was a counselor and teacher of the most learned men of that time, as was St. Athanasius the Great. When certain Greek philosophers tempted him with literary wisdom, Anthony shamed them with the question: “Which is older, the understanding or the book? Which of these two was the cause of the other?” Ashamed, the philosophers dispersed for they perceived that they only had literary knowledge without understanding and Anthony had understanding.

Here is a man who attained perfection in as far as man, in general, can attain on earth. Here is an instructor to instructors and a teacher to teachers, who, for a full eighty five years perfected himself and only in that way was he able to perfect many others. Filled with many years of life and great works, Anthony died in the Lord in the year 335 A.D.

Jan 26 – The Venerable Xenophont and Maria and their Sons John and Arcadius

They were prominent and wealthy citizens of Constantinople. Xenophont and his wife Maria lived a God-pleasing life and dedicated all their attention to the Christian upbringing of their sons. When their sons reached majority, they were sent to study in Beirut; but it so happened that a storm capsized their boat. By the Providence of God, John and Arcadius were somehow saved. They were tossed ashore by the waves but in two different places so that each thought the other was drowned.

Out of grief for each other, they both became monks in two different monasteries. After two years, their grieving parents came to Jerusalem on a pilgrimage to pay homage before the holy shrines. There, with the help of the “discernment” of a spiritual father, first the brothers met and, after that, the parents with their children. Out of gratitude to God, Xenophont and Maria distributed their entire estate to the poor and both of them were tonsured.

The history of these four souls is touching and it shows how the Lord wonderfully guides the fate of those who believe in Him; how He permits pain and sorrow upon them that they may, later on, be strengthened in faith, in order to lead them into still greater joy. They lived and died in the Lord in the fifth century.

Catholic Beards

BeardAbout a year ago I began growing a beard. Coupled with my glasses and accent, it made everything I said sound profound and insightful.

For the past twelve months my family expressed their disapproval concerning this addition to my chin, so this Christmas I gave them all a special Christmas present. I shaved. I even let my niece first have a go at it with the clippers. If that doesn’t make me “Uncle Of The Year”, I don’t know what will…

Analysis paralysis and making your first move

One of my recently-discovered TV shows is Person of Interest starring Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. It was introduced to me by my housemate, Aaron, so thanks to him I’ve been binge-watching the last four seasons on Netflix.

I don’t want to give too much away, but the basic gist of the show’s storyline is that a man named Harold has built an extremely advanced artificial intelligence which he simply refers to as “The Machine”.

One of my favourite scenes from Season 4 was a flashback in episode 11 (“If-then-else”) where we see Harold teaching The Machine to play chess. The Machine is taking a very long time to make its opening moves because it is checking all the possible moves and permutations. The Machine is effectively stuck in what is commonly known as “Analysis Paralysis”, so Harold speaks to the machine…

Harold’s dialogue in the show is typically very profound, but I found what he says in this scene particularly striking:

Each possible move [in chess] represents a different game… By the second move, there are 72,084 possible games. By the third, 9 million. By the fourth there are more possible games of chess than there are atoms in the universe. No one could possibly predict them all, even you.

Which means that that first move can be terrifying. It’s the furthest point from the end of the game, there’s a virtually infinite sea of possibilities between you and the other side…

…But it also means that if you make a mistake, there’s a nearly infinite amount of ways to fix it. So you should simply relax and play.

Harold Finch, Person of Interest

My personality type certainly predisposes me towards Analysis Paralysis. Like The Machine, I’m often afraid of making a mistake, so much so that I spend protracted periods of time considering all the options and possible consequences. Now while prudence is a good thing, this kind of analysis can be debilitating. It’s a problem when you’re so risk averse that you never actually take a course of action.

It is here that I find Harold’s words comforting. In life, much like in a game a chess, it’s virtually impossible to check every possible scenario and say for absolute certain what will happen, but the sooner you start, the sooner you can make adjustments. So, “…simply relax and play”.

Head back to Sunday School, Colbert…

On Catholic Memes, I just saw a video where Stephen Colbert challenged another celebrity to a Catholic throwdown. This time his opponent was Patricia Heaton, star of “Everybody loves Raymond” and “The Middle”:

Oh Stephen…you disappoint me.

I counted at least three major Catholic mistakes in this throwdown, three “maxima culpas”, if you will. So get out your sackcloth and ashes, and let me I teach you something about the Catholic Faith…

Bonus Post: Participating in the Exodus

Given that my last two posts (#1 | #2) have related to the Exodus, my friend Sean sent me a link to an article by Dave Armstrong about the relationship between the original Passover and the Seder meal celebrated by modern-day Children of Israel.

I had heard before from theologians that Jewish tradition spoke about how, when present-day Jews celebrate Passover, there is something of a mystical participation with the original Exodus under Moses. This understanding of participation in a past event has an application in the realm of Catholic apologetics. I have often spoken to Protestants who insist that when we speak of the Lord’s Supper as being a “memorial” (“anamnesis” in Greek), it simply means that we remember what Jesus did and nothing more. A look at Jewish tradition present some problems with this understanding.

For the rest of this post, I would just like to offer a few quotations from Dave’s article, but I thoroughly recommend that you read the whole thing.

In a book specifically about the Passover celebration, Martin Sicker writes:

The Haggadah then continues with a statement that is also found in the Mishnah that calls upon each participant in the Seder to share vicariously in the experience of the Exodus.

In every generation one is obliged to view oneself as though he [personally] had gone out from Egypt. As it is said: And thou shalt tell thy son in that day, saying: It is because of that which the Lord did for me when I came forth out of Egypt (Ex. 13:8).

The Haggadah then amplifies this teaching, providing an appropriate biblical prooftext in support of its elaboration.

The Holy One, blessed is He, did not redeem only our ancestors, but also redeemed us along with them. As it is said: And He brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which He swore unto our fathers. (Deut. 6:23).

. . . The Mishnah calls upon each participant in the Seder to make an intellectual leap across the millennia and thereby to share directly in the experience of their ancestors.

Another Jewish source concurs:

By participating in the Seder, we are vicariously reliving the Exodus from Egypt. Around our festival table, the past and present merge and the future is promising.

Litany of Humility

PubEarlier this week, we had catechesis at my parish. We’ve been meeting for the last few months and we’re currently working our way through the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

During our discussion, Father Michael said that this week is “Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee” but it really should be “Sunday of Zacchaeus”. He explained that, because Easter is so early this year, the pre-Lent celebrations take precedence. To this I commented, “Poor Zacchaeus, missing out again, only this time it’s because time is too short…”. This was met with various sighs and groans from those in the class, all sure signs that everyone missed me while I was back in England for Christmas.

Anyway…as I said, this Sunday is “Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee”, a reference to Luke 18:9-14, where Jesus tells a story which contrasts the attitude of two different men as they come before God in prayer…

I was told by my former Spiritual Director that the Church purposefully places this Gospel passage in the run-up to the beginning of Lent in order to prepare us for the Great Fast. During Lent, we will are called to increased attentiveness to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I was told that this passage is read to us to call us to humility, lest we too readily start patting ourselves on the back for all our good works. Ultimately, we all have to stand before God saying “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner”.

I find nothing knocks me off my high horse quicker than by praying the Litany of Humility. Here’s that prayer set to music by Danielle Rose:
