Communicating the Gospel

12 Feb

Dr. Christine WoodOn 4th February at Cafe Coyote in Old Town, Dr. Christine Wood gave the following Theology On Tap talk:

God has Spoken, he has truly broken the great SILENCE:
Communicating the Gospel to Others!

Dr. Wood is originally from Sydney Australia, but teaches at John Paul The Great Catholic University here in America’s favourite city, San Diego in California.

(I wonder if she gets confused for being English as often as I get confused for being an Australian…hmmm…maybe I’ll ask her that next time during the Q&A session….)

Here in San Diego Diocese we make the audio of our Theology on Tap sessions freely available and you may download Dr. Wood’s talk from the links below:

(Oh, and well done to Kevin for getting a mention for the JP2 Group during the Q&A!)

Theology On Tap: Year of Faith

29 Dec

Year of FaithThe purpose of Theology On Tap is to help Young Adults grow together in their faith in a relaxed, informal environment. A few days ago I posted the audio from Dr. Michael Barber’s Theology On Tap talk at John Paul “The Great” University on the subject of “Spiritual lessons about politics from the book of Revelation”.

Today I’m posting the audio from another talk in that series, this time by Fr. Andy Younan. Earlier this year Pope Benedict called for a “Year of Faith”. Fr. Andy’s talk addresses this subject as well as another subject you may have heard a lot about, the “New Evangelization”

The talk is entitled “The Year of Faith & the New Evangelization” and is available for download by clicking on the link below:

The Year of Faith & The New Evangelization – Part 1    The Year of Faith & The New Evangelization – Part 2

One of the parishes with which I’m involved here in San Diego will be hosting a conference as part of the Year of Faith. As soon as we have our dates and speakers confirmed I’ll post some more information.

Theology On Tap: Spiritual Lessons about Politics

27 Dec

Did your Christmas presents disappoint? Did Santa get lost on the way to your house? Were you naughty and not, in fact, nice? Well, no need to worry! In today’s post there’s a present we can all enjoy! ;-)

Back in November we had another round of Theology On Tap here in San Diego, this time at John Paul “The Great” University. The first talk was from Dr. Michael Barber, entitled “Spiritual Lessons about Politics from the book of Revelation”Dr. Barber’s talk is broken into two MP3s, roughly half an hour apiece, and is available for download below:

Spiritual Lessons about Politics – Part 1          Spiritual Lessons about Politics – Part 2

No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength…
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.
 - Psalm 33:16-20

Four Horsemen

They clearly want us to vote Republican…

This year I’m actually going to be re-reading Dr. Barber’s commentary on the Book of Revelation and studying it with my friend Kevin, so you can probably expect to see a few Apocalyptic-related posts “coming soon”… :)

Tuesday Adventures

10 Oct

Yesterday at midday I got a text from Carrie, the Young Adult Coordinator for the Diocese. The speaker for that night’s “Faith On Fire” was ill and she needed a replacement speaker. This is how I came to find myself a few hours later standing in front of forty or so 18-25 year olds giving the talk “Social Media and Faith-”How to use it without being used by it”

Fortunately, I wasn’t the only one speaking that night. After speaking for about half an hour, Timmerie Millington got up and shared with us how Social Media has played an important part in her Pro-Life work.

Throughout the night I rather shamelessly plugged my blog, so if you’re visiting here for the first time because of that, welcome! While you’re here, you should also go check out Timmerie’s Blog:

Love, Dating and Relationships

01 Sep

Over the course of our “Theology On Tap” series we heard talks from Fr. Matt SpahrCy Kellett and Dr. Karen Saroki. This Thursday the series was brought to a close by the ever-popular Jackie Francois.

Actually, Jackie wasn’t the only one who spoke that night, being supported by her boyfriend Bobby Angel:

Jackie Francois is a full-time, travelling worship leader and speaker from Orange County. Bobby Angel, her boyfriend, is the assistance campus minister at the Servite High School in Anaheim.

Both of them have studied at the Theology Of The Body institute. They enjoy lengthy books, long walks on the beach, quoting The Office* and preparing together for the imminent robot invasion…

Below is the recording of the talk they gave entitled “Love, dating and relationships: Calling all people wanting to love and be loved according to God’s holy desire”:

Jackie also recently released a follow-up to her debut album “Your Kingdom Is Glorious”.  The new album is called “Divine Comedy”. It includes a cover of one my favourite Hughes songs, “Beautiful One”, as well as Jackie’s own material, “Everything You” and “New Creation” being among my favourites.

Go buy it on iTunes or Spirit & Song :-)

* The TV show, not the Liturgy of the Hours. I got quite confused there for a while…:-/

“Bears”? 2 Kinds 2:24
“Beets”? Genesis 1:29
“Battlestar Galactica”? erm….

Voting Your Conscience

17 Aug

Cy Kellett“Theology On Tap” continues apace. Last week we heard from Fr. Matt Spahr, the pastor at the Immaculata parish, speaking about discernment. This week we heard from Cy Kellett:

Aug 7: “What is your purpose? What is your call?”
Learning to listen to God’s voice and follow it. -Fr. Matt Spahr

Aug 14: “Citizens and Disciples”
Voting your conscience! What does that look like?- Cy Kellett

Aug 21: “How to live the single life AND meet Mr/Mrs Right”
Living the single life according to God’s will.- Karen Saroki

Aug 28th: “Love, dating and relationships”

Here’s Cy’s biography:

Cyril Jones-Kellett is the Community Relations Officer for AM 1000 KCEO, San Diego – an Immaculate Heart Radio Station.

He served for a decade as editor-in-chief of San Diego’s Southern Cross. Before his writing career, he spent years working on the streets of Boston with the homeless mentally ill. Part of that time was spent living in an urban Catholic Worker house dedicated to serving homeless men. He also spent four years supervising a home for severely traumatized children.

For fun he likes to spend time with his three teens tying to impress them with his knowledge of pop culture.

Aside from the digs at my homeland, it was a great talk. Here’s the audio:
