Thumbnails in Facebook

As you know, I write my blog entries a while before they actually get posted. Since writing this entry I have found better ways of achieving the desired effect using WordPress Plug-ins. However, I decided to post it anyway since I think it’s still quite a neat exercise in tricking computers to do what you want… 🙂

Today is purely a technical blog for my fellow bloggers.

I’ve had a problem that has been bugging me for some time.  If I post a link to a blog entry on Facebook which contains no images, then no thumbnail image is displayed:

I’ve noticed that when I don’t have a thumbnail image, the web traffic generated by people visiting my blog from Facebook seriously declines.

This is particularly problematic for my “Friday Frivolity” posts. Since these entries are usually just a few lines of text and a YouTube video, they have no thumbnails when shared on Facebook.

Don’t be too eager to hit "Send"

I had this blog entry in my “drafts” folder for over six months and it’s been quite some time since I posted an entry for the “Stuff I’ve had to learn“ category. Today I would like to remedy this situation by presenting a piece of wisdom that I’ve been forced to learn over the years.

This bit of advice has certainly resolved many tense situations and has saved more than one friendship:

Turbo-Charged Communication

Communication today is certainly quicker than it was in the past.  It is now extremely easy to fire off a quick message to someone on the other side of the world, whereas in times past it required the purchase of stationery equipment, the composition of a letter, the purchase of the appropriate stamp and delivery to the nearest postbox.  A substantial wait was then required before a reply would be received.

I’m all in favour of modern communication methods – cell phones, skype, email and text messaging make communicating with those in far-flung places both efficient and cheap. For me personally, it’s what makes living in America and staying in close contact with friends in England possible. However, I would suggest that our advances in technology sometimes make communication just a little bit *too* easy…

What do you mean, I don't communicate good?

One of the charges I’ve had leveled at me in the past is that I’m not a very open person and that I’m not very good at communicating what I’m thinking. Now, I personally don’t think this is true, but I guess one can only deny something like this for so long, particularly when the rest of the world seems to think otherwise.  And so in the spirit of good communication….
